From the President and Executive Director
Dear MIBB Members,
Because of some exciting activities during the month of November that will take both of us to Israel for a significant amount of time, we have decided that this will be a combined October-November newsletter.
It is with great enthusiasm that we announce the MIBB's involvement in the upcoming visit of Governor Jennifer Granholm to Israel! The Governor and a delegation of economic developers and private businesspeople from Michigan (including MIBB President Chuck Newman) will travel to Israel on November 15-19 for an investment mission. The objective of the mission is to strengthen the Michigan-Israel business and investment relationship. The delegation will be meeting with companies that are doing business in Michigan, those that are considering Michigan as a place to do business, and others that the State would like to attract to Michigan. A full report on the outcome of the mission will be reported in the December newsletter.
Other important updates:
- MIBB held an exciting membership meeting at ReCelllular on October 21. See below for details.
- We have kicked off our membership, life science, and alternative energy task forces! Soon we will do the same with the homeland security, IT/software, and automotive/manufacturing groups. If you are not on a task force and any of these areas interest you, please contact Ron. Joining a task force is a great way to get more involved with our activities. - The 2nd annual Israel-Michigan automotive partnering event will take place at Automation Alley in Troy on January 19-21, 2009, to coincide with the first public week of the North American International Automotive Show. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation, together with Automation Alley and the Michigan Israel Business Bridge, will be co-sponsoring this event.
And lastly, as we near the end of our first calendar year of operation, we would like to thank all those who have shown their support to MIBB by joining the organization. We are now actively renewing memberships and continuing to recruit new members. For new members, we have a matching challenge in place by our President Chuck Newman whereby those who join by the end of the calendar year will have their financial commitment matched. This is a great way to demonstrate your personal dedication to the organization and provide additional financial resources to MIBB.
All the best.
Ron Perry, Executive Director

MIBB Holds Membership Meeting at ReCellular
On October 21, 2008, the Michigan Israel Business Bridge held a membership meeting at the international headquarters of ReCellular Inc., in Dexter. The event drew nearly 30 participants and included very engaging guests and an equally exciting discussion.
We are grateful to Chuck Newman, CEO and Founder of ReCellular, and Co-Founder and President of the Michigan Israel Business Bridge, for hosting this meeting. The event kicked off with a tour of ReCellular's "no-waste" facility. Attendees learned how ReCellular processes 25,000 cell phones every day, reusing and recycling them for shipment all over the world.
Following the tour, Chuck Newman and Ron Perry welcomed the group and updated them on the organization and recent activities. Eran Bashan PhD and Israel Hodish MD, the Israeli co-founders of Hygieia Medical, a new Ann Arbor start-up developing an "endocrinologist-to-go" device for diabetes management, then presented their company and discussed their experience establishing a company in Michigan.
In addition, the meeting included a discussion with 7 of the 19 Israelis currently obtaining their MBA degree at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. They described their backgrounds and future aspirations, and suggested ways in which the MBA students and MIBB could collaborate in the future. For the MIBB, it was a terrific opportunity to begin a relationship with Israel's future business leaders.
This networking and educational event is an example of the many benefits members obtain from joining the MIBB. MIBB members can look forward to many other exciting meetings in the future.

Member Spotlight
A lifelong resident of Michigan, Steve Linder understands the need to increase economic development in the state. He recalls becoming involved in the Michigan Israel Business Bridge after hearing about the organization from its co-founder, Susan Herman. He became active in order to promote the well-being of the state.
Since joining, Linder has been a strong advocate for the MIBB and encourages others to join. "If we support organizations like this that are focused on economic development, specifically finding businesses for partnerships, we all derive the direct benefit from it."
Linder understands the struggles that companies face when looking to expand or penetrate new markets. "The most common challenges organizations wanting to do business outside their immediate geographic region face are how to find partners and how to start. He believes the MIBB fulfills the role of a facilitator and makes the process of expanding less daunting.
A managing partner at Lansing-based Sterling Corporation, Linder fundraises for coalitions, political parties, non-profits, and is involved in helping businesses find their voice and have an impact on legislative policy.
