Michigan Leadership Israel Trade Mission 2025: Innovation as a Bridge to Partnership and Peace
Krista Siefert, Managing Director – Operations & External Affairs
After a two-year pause, the Michigan Israel Business Accelerator proudly relaunched its outbound trade missions with a robust slate of high-impact meetings. The 18-member delegation—our largest to date—was led by Ambassador John Rakolta, Jr. (ret.) and included four MIBA Board Members, uniting senior leaders from government, industry, academia, and the private sector.
The mission began with visits to key religious and historical sites and meaningful time in the South, giving us foundational insight into the backdrop of Israel today—its history, its complexity, and the lived realities that have shaped its people and economy. As highlighted in Start-Up Nation (Dan Senor and Saul Singer), Israel’s innovation culture did not emerge by chance. It was forged out of necessity, strengthened by constraints, and driven by a national mindset that prizes resilience, adaptability, and creative problem-solving.
Building on that context, we participated in a focused series of strategic business engagements, gaining firsthand exposure to the depth of Israel’s innovation ecosystem. We met with leading venture funds and accelerators—including TAU Ventures, Lool Ventures, and PICO—to explore emerging technologies and partnership opportunities. We also toured cutting-edge companies in mobility, energy, and defense such as Addionics and Rafael, gaining insight into Israel’s R&D pipeline and its relevance to Michigan’s economy.
High-level briefings with Ambassador Mark Regev, President Herzog, U.S. Embassy leadership, and senior security analysts provided us with essential geopolitical and economic context. Visits to the Peres Center for Peace and Innovation and the Hand in Hand bilingual school further demonstrated how innovation, values, and shared purpose intersect in Israel’s business landscape. Together, these engagements equipped our delegation with actionable insights, valuable relationships, and clear pathways for future collaboration.
The weight of the past two years was unmistakable. War pulls people apart in ways that are painful and complex. And yet, we met Jewish and Arab Israelis who still hope for the same thing: peace. Their quiet optimism and resilience were deeply moving.
At MIBA, our mission centers on leveraging innovation to bring people together. We focus on aligning interests, expanding opportunities, and strengthening partnerships that support economic growth and the long-term stability it brings. This trip reminded me how powerful this work is. Innovation is a bridge, and bridges create the conditions for peace.
I’m returning with a renewed sense of purpose and possibility—and a deeper belief that the connections we build can help shape something larger than any one of us.
